I believe since I was a young girl, the Lord's spirit touched me and guided me to this moment. I can recall singing "Jesus Loves Me" and "The B.I.B.L.E." over and over again and both my Lord and His word took root in my heart and soul which sings on today.
From the time I was 17, my passion for serving and following in the footsteps of Jesus was for the young people of our world. It was my privilege first to serve as a volunteer youth leader to teenagers; then the ministry of children touched my heart; and officially in 1991 I became the Youth Pastor. I had countless opportunities to grow in education and will be forever thankful for the gifts I received through Group in Loveland, Colorado, as a youth leader and speaker. Yet, my true education in the ministry has come from walking daily with Jesus; serving, studying, praying and caring for all God's people. Without showing my true age, it has been 46 years of learning and growing and experiencing His joy and peace through all circumstances that have been my greatest lessons.
Although I began this walk in 1972, from 1995 to 2005, I had the opportunity to continue as the Youth Pastor with Pastor Herb Dorfman; from 2005 to 2010 as Co-Pastor with Pastor David Boone and then to my surprise, was called as the Senior Pastor in December, 2011.
I count it a true privilege to be called the Pastor and Friend to the family of Preakness Faith Community. I have visited many church families over the years but I have yet to find a more welcoming, caring, giving, faithful family of believers as the one I serve. What makes us different? I believe the words of this song describe it best:
There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord;
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.
Sweet Holy Spirit, Sweet heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us, filling us with Your love.
And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise;
Without a doubt we'll know that we have been revived,
When we shall leave this place.
Come, stop by, visit with us sometime! I promise as you enter our doors, you too will discover something very special and unique about our Preakness family for the sweet, sweet spirit is waiting for YOU too!
Karen believes “great things come when you least expect them”. Karen met Pastor Jane Harlan (Bishop) almost a decade ago when working with the Kreative Kids theatrical school that rehearsed at PFC. Initially she worked as an interim accompanist and musical director for the Christmas cantata “Imagine.” Thanks to the warm and wonderful ministry of Pastor Jane Harlan (Bishop) as well as the Preakness Faith Community Karen has found a new love of Christian music.
Karen Romero holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University, and Masters of Music from William Paterson University. In addition to having the privilege of working for the Preakness Faith Community as music director, Karen has worked as a music director and accompanist for regional theater, community theater, and various school productions. She is currently teaching middle school vocal music for 6-8 grade students, and loving her new role as mommy. Karen and her husband Charlie have been pursuing building their family through adoption. After a long journey and many prayers, Karen and Charlie adopted Elaina Francesca (19 months), and 8 months later Karen gave birth to Mikaela Justyna (12 months). The Romero family feels very blessed to have so many new “aunties and uncles” and to be part of such a great community of faith.
"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15
I have been a friend of my Lord for a very long time. My foundation of faith was developed early and my desire to be a servant and give back to others became part of me.
My profession as a teacher helped me work with children and as I got older, caring for the needs of the elderly became my calling.
I have represented our church for over thirty years at the "Cliffs" a Baptist Home for the Aged in West Orange. As a volunteer I had one-on-one time with those at the home and it was one of my most enjoyable experiences.
As Director of Senior Ministries at the Preakness Faith Community in Wayne today, I plan, coordinate, and direct monthly gatherings and programs for the "Young at Heart" senior group and also minister to their needs. Come join us for fantastic programs and refreshments and our ministry is open to all over 50 years of age in our community. Being active, making new friends and enjoying life is our goal at YAH. How could anyone say NO to such a wonderful invitation?
I know the Lord has had a special hand in directing me through my life. With His continued help, He will keep showing me the way to serve Him. Slowing down is not in my vocabulary. The best might be yet to come!
