We Care! We Serve! We Believe!
From the Laptop of Pastor Jane
I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
Why Give Thanks?
Why should I give thanks? There is illness in my family; I lost my job; I am being evicted from my home; my husband left me; I never hear from my children; I have no money; and the list goes on and on! Why should I give thanks?
All throughout the book of Psalms, David encourages each of us to give thanks, in spite of our circumstances, and to praise the Lord of Lords, telling of His wonderful deeds! How do we do that through loss, failure, unem-ployment, illness and relationships falling apart?
If you look at my first paragraph I wrote, the word that stood out strongly is “I” and as our world may call it “the poor me” syndrome. In 2018, “I” or “ME” is on the top of the list in almost all categories, pushing aside the needs of others and sadly even, the desire to help oth-ers! No wonder thankfulness keeps falling off the top 10 and our world is struggling!
Yet, through those challenges, thankfulness is evident all around us and especially in our actions in the life of Preakness Faith Community! Together as a family we feed and clothe the homeless; prepare bags for those in need through the Blessing Bag program; care for those abused; rebuild homes of the elderly and disabled; jump in to aid those in disaster areas; care for our col-lege students; and even take care of those in our own community going through difficult times!
And what happens when we turn the “I” to a “We”? Our Lord creates in each of us a thankful heart for the blessings we receive!
Oh how I wish my family and friends did not have to go through the challenges of emotional, physical and spir-itual warfare but through it all, I believe you will agree it is in the valleys of life we realize just how blessed we are from God! Yet, none of us wish those challenges to anyone!
So friends, with a roof over our head; food to eat; and loved ones around us, it is my prayer we give thanks each and every day and focus our eyes up and out and not within! As Ernie Couch shared yesterday, great things can happen from just one act of kindness.
As I personally enter this Thanksgiving season, I take with me one of my greatest lessons and give thanks. It was through the valleys of my life, God sent me not only His precious son, Jesus, to lift me up but countless others to encourage, share, and walk beside me so I may be able to climb the mountain once again. May we take time to count our blessings, one by one, and to be that blessing to another!
Happy Thanksgiving each and every day, dear friends! Pastor Jane
